About King Solomon
The most legendary character in the Bible, who has the most legend surrounding him outside Biblical sources, is
King Solomon, son of
David, who reigned in Israel in the 10th century BCE. More legend surrounds this character than any other character in the Bible.
The question is why him?

Nothing less than that. All of God's effort, beginning with creation, scrapping that with the Flood and then the Dispersal at Babel, and moving on to
Abraham, choosing his family, nurturing it and watching over it. Then taking that group out of Egypt with a story not yet paralleled in all of human history with jaw-dropping miracles that are God's own rewriting of the history books. Gathering this family at the edge of a mountain and speaking to them all about his Law, and bringing them into their promised land with that Law, only to have them percolate for another half a millennium until the right leader came along.

David was everything God was looking for in a leader. With the smarts and planning of
Jacob and the raw power of
Esau (Esau and David are the only two in the Bible described as "red faced") topped off with the righteous zeal of Elijah, he and his line were going to be the eternal leaders of Israel. So David went off conquering and winning and bringing glory to God's people. And yet, with all his success, he was not allowed to put the finishing touches on hia kingdom. David wanted more than anything to build the
Holy Temple to be the final resting place of the Ark of the Covenant. God refused. After all, as faithful as David was, he was still a violent King and had killed many men. His son Solomon was chosen in his place to put the finishing touches on the manifestation of God's rule on Earth.
Solomon's reign was the most spectacular in all of Biblical history. He inspired so much awe that every surrounding country immediately gave in to his will. Everyone wished him well. It is said that Solomon was the wisest man ever to have graced the planet. The Bible gives credit to his ingenius request of God. One night, God came to him and granted him one wish. Solomon, of all things, asked for wisdom. And because he asked for this thing, and not riches, power, nor fame, he received all of the above, and how. To this day, the first request any Jew makes of God in his three times daily prayer, is wisdom.

Solomon built the Temple, and the moment that the
Ark of the Covenant was placed in the Holy of Holies and the glory of God filled the room, God's vision for the planet Earth, for that period of time, was complete. All of His work had come to this moment, when his chosen people would inspire awe around the world and reflect divine glory.
The 40 year period of Solomon's reign was the high point of Biblical history. Everything from Solomon on was all downhill. This is why so much legend surrounds this man. He had it all, at the right place in the right time, and he led human history to its climax. The author of the
Song of Songs,
Ecclesiastes, and
Proverbs, and the forerunner to the annointed Messiah who will, at some point in time, spring from his line to permanently complete the mission.
He is the legendary King Solomon.
